No, Birth Control Isn’t the Only Solution to PCOS

When I was diagnosed with PCOS, I left the doctor’s office with a lot of confusion. I remember Googling everything I could find. And over and over again, one message echoed across the internet: “Your doctor will likely prescribe birth control.” That was the standard script. Birth control was often the first (and sometimes the only) “solution” offered to women with PCOS to “regulate” our cycles, clear up acne, and tame symptoms.

But I kept thinking, why is something that doesn’t even fix the root causes treated like the end-all be-all?

What Birth Control Can and Can’t Do

Birth control can help reduce some PCOS symptoms, but it doesn’t completely address what’s going on beneath the surface.

It may help with:

  • Reducing acne
  • Migraines
  • Inducing lighter/less painful periods
  • Reduce risk of certain cancers

What it doesn’t support:

  • Heal insulin resistance (a key driver of PCOS)
  • Lower chronic inflammation
  • Improve ovulatory function
  • Support long-term gut, liver, or metabolic health
  • Depletes nutrients like Zinc

Contraceptives like birth control suppress your natural hormones, and when the use is discontinued, androgen production can increase. In other words, it can help you feel like things are “normal,” while your body is still quietly screaming for support.


So What Are the Root Causes?

  • Insulin resistance: Makes it harder for your body to regulate blood sugar and hormones, leading to fatigue, weight changes, and irregular cycles.
  • Chronic inflammation: Linked to bloating, cystic acne, and other symptoms.
  • Elevated androgens (male hormones): Increased hair growth, hair loss, and breakouts.

None of these are solved by a pill. They require a whole-body approach, a lifestyle rooted in nourishment, not numbness.


What Helped Me Heal Holistically

At first, I started with the idea that a pill would help me (spironolactone). Then I discovered this book called The PCOS Plan and began to make an effort to connect my kitchen with my body.

And the more I learned, the more I realized that my PCOS wasn’t a curse, it was a call to slow down, get curious, and honor my body’s rhythm.

Here’s what shifted everything:

  • Balanced blood sugar with meals that always include protein, fat, and fiber
  • Movement I enjoy, like walking, yoga, or dance, not overexercising to “fix” myself
  • Stress reduction practices, like herbal teas, journaling, and proper sleep

It wasn’t instant. It wasn’t perfect. But it worked because it honored all of me, not just my symptoms.


Why We Need More Than One Default

If you’re thriving on birth control, that’s reasonable. If you’re exploring other ways to support your PCOS, that’s reasonable too. What isn’t? Acting like birth control is the only option, or dismissing women when they ask for alternatives.

PCOS is a complex condition. We deserve providers who look beyond the surface and understand us beyond a set of symptoms to suppress.

So if you’re tired of being told “just take the pill,” know this:
You’re allowed to ask more questions.
You’re allowed to try different routes.
You’re allowed to listen to your body.

Healing isn’t a prescription pad. It’s a partnership with your body, your knowledge, and your intuition.
